Bassey Inyang in Calabar
A man whose identity could not be immediately established was on yesterday arrested in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for attempted to sell his child.
The suspect, believed to be in his 30s, was apprehended in Bogobri area where the Hausa community resides in the Calabar metropolis.
Information gathered indicated that the man was arrested when the prospective buyers, some Hausa men he had initially entered into negotiation with, informed the police about the intent of the man to sell the boy believed to be his son.
An eye witness who narrated the incident said there was pandemonium in the area when the man was apprehended by the police.
“It was at the point that he wanted to collect money for the child that the police came in and arrested him. They took him and the child away. It is good that it happened because so many people have been giving us a bad name in this area over this kind of things happening here. He(suspect) is now in the police station,” the eye witness said.
When the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Hogan Bassey, was contacted, he said he would get back to it.
